Cinnamon rolls are a beloved pastry known for their soft, fluffy texture and delightful combination of cinnamon and sugar. The history of cinnamon rolls dates back centuries to Nordic countries, where cinnamon itself was a prized spice. Cinnamon rolls, or “kanelbulle” as they are called in Sweden, have been a staple in Scandinavian baking for generations. In the early 20th century, Scandinavian immigrants brought their cherished cinnamon roll recipes to the United States, where they quickly gained popularity and became a cherished treat enjoyed around the world.
The taste profile of a cinnamon roll is a heavenly blend of sweet, warm, and comforting flavors. The soft and fluffy dough provides the perfect canvas for the rich and aromatic cinnamon sugar filling. Cinnamon, with its warm and slightly spicy notes, infuses the rolls with a distinctive flavor that is both comforting and indulgent. The sweet and buttery nature of the dough, combined with the caramelized cinnamon sugar filling, creates a luscious sweetness that is not overpowering but perfectly balanced.
When cinnamon rolls are fresh from the oven, their aroma fills the air, enticing anyone nearby. The soft and tender texture of the dough, coupled with the gooey and caramelized cinnamon sugar filling, creates a melt-in-your-mouth experience. Each bite offers a perfect balance of sweetness and warmth, with the cinnamon imparting a cozy and nostalgic feeling. The addition of icing or frosting on top, such as cream cheese frosting, adds a creamy and tangy element that further enhances the overall taste.
Cinnamon rolls are often enjoyed as a special breakfast or brunch treat, but they can also be savored as a comforting dessert or snack. Whether enjoyed with a cup of hot coffee or tea, or simply eaten on their own, cinnamon rolls provide a delightful experience for the taste buds. - – 2 ¼ teaspoons instant yeast
- – 1 teaspoon salt
- – ¾ cup milk
- – ½ cup unsalted butter melted
- – 3 large eggs
Ingredients for the filling:
- – 1 cup brown sugar packed
- – 2 ½ tablespoons ground cinnamon
- – ½ cup unsalted butter softened
Ingredients for the cream cheese frosting:
- – 4 ounces cream cheese softened
- – ¼ cup unsalted butter softened
- – 1 ½ cups powdered sugar
- – 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine 4 cups of flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
- In a small saucepan, heat the milk until warm. Remove from heat and add the melted butter. Let it cool slightly.
- In the mixing bowl, add the milk mixture and the eggs to the dry ingredients. Stir until a soft dough forms.
- Place the dough on a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes, adding more flour if necessary, until the dough is smooth and elastic.
- Transfer the dough to a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough into a rectangle approximately 16×12 inches.
- Spread the softened butter evenly over the dough. In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar and cinnamon, then sprinkle the mixture over the buttered dough.
- Starting from one long edge, tightly roll up the dough into a log. Cut the log into 12 equal-sized rolls.
- Place the rolls in the greased baking dish, leaving a little space between each roll. Cover with a kitchen towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
- Bake the cinnamon rolls in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
- While the rolls are baking, prepare the cream cheese frosting. In a mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese and butter until smooth. Gradually add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract, and continue to beat until well combined.
- Once the rolls are baked, remove them from the oven and let them cool slightly. Spread the cream cheese frosting over the warm rolls.
