Delicious Chicken Parmesan Recipe: A Classic American Favorite

Chicken Parmesan, also known as Chicken Parmigiana, is a popular Italian-American dish with a rich and flavorful history. Its origins can be traced back to southern Italy, where veal or eggplant were traditionally used instead of chicken. As Italian immigrants settled in the United States, they adapted their beloved recipe to include more readily available ingredients, leading to the birth of Chicken Parmesan.

The dish typically starts with boneless chicken breasts, which are pounded thin and coated in a breadcrumb and Parmesan cheese mixture. The chicken is then pan-fried until golden and crispy, creating a delightful texture. Next, a generous layer of tomato sauce is spread over the chicken, followed by a topping of mozzarella cheese. The dish is finished off in the oven, allowing the cheese to melt and become gooey while the flavors meld together.

The taste profile of Chicken Parmesan is a harmonious combination of savory, tangy, and cheesy flavors. The chicken provides a tender and juicy base, complemented by the crispiness of the breadcrumb coating. The tomato sauce adds a vibrant and slightly acidic note, balancing the richness of the cheese. The melted mozzarella brings a creamy and gooey texture, with its mild and slightly salty flavor enhancing the overall taste experience.

Traditionally, Chicken Parmesan is served with pasta, particularly spaghetti or linguine, coated in the same tomato sauce used for the chicken. This pairing creates a perfect harmony of flavors and textures. The pasta acts as a delicious side dish, serving as a bed for the chicken and soaking up the flavors of the tomato sauce. Additionally, a sprinkling of fresh basil or parsley adds a refreshing herbal element, providing a pop of color and an aromatic touch to the dish.

Over the years, Chicken Parmesan has become a beloved classic in Italian-American cuisine. It has found its way onto the menus of countless Italian restaurants, often accompanied by a side of garlic bread or a simple salad. Whether enjoyed as a comforting home-cooked meal or savored in a restaurant, Chicken Parmesan continues to delight taste buds with its hearty, cheesy goodness and satisfying flavors.

Ingredients

  • 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 Cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs beaten
  • 2 Cups breadcrumbs
  • ½ Cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • ½ Tsp dried oregano
  • ½ Tsp dried basil
  • ¾ Tsp garlic powder
  • ¼ Cup olive oil
  • 2 Cup marinara sauce
  • 1 Cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Fresh basil leaves for garnish

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Season the chicken breasts with salt and pepper on both sides.
  • In three separate shallow bowls, place the flour, beaten eggs, and breadcrumbs mixed with Parmesan cheese, dried oregano, dried basil, and garlic powder.
  • Dredge each chicken breast in the flour, shaking off any excess. Dip the chicken into the beaten eggs, allowing any excess to drip off, and then coat it with the breadcrumb mixture, pressing gently to adhere.
  • In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the breaded chicken breasts and cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown. Transfer the chicken to a baking dish.
  • Spoon marinara sauce over each chicken breast, covering them evenly. Top with shredded mozzarella cheese.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  • Remove from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes. Garnish with fresh basil leaves.
  • Serve the chicken parmigiana with pasta or a side of your choice, such as spaghetti or a mixed green salad.
