The Ultimate Strawberry Shortcake Recipe

The Ultimate Strawberry Shortcake Recipe

Strawberry shortcake is a delightful dessert that has gained immense popularity around the world. Its origins can be traced back to the United States, where it has become a classic treat enjoyed during the spring and summer seasons. The traditional strawberry shortcake consists of three main components: a buttery and crumbly shortcake base, fresh strawberries, and whipped cream.

The history of strawberry shortcake can be dated back to the 19th century when it was first mentioned in American cookbooks. The shortcake itself is believed to have been inspired by British scones, but with a lighter and more tender texture. Over time, the dessert evolved with the addition of strawberries and whipped cream, which perfectly complemented the buttery richness of the shortcake. The combination of these ingredients created a delightful contrast of flavors and textures, making it a beloved dessert among people of all ages.

In terms of flavor profile, strawberry shortcake is a harmonious blend of sweet and tangy flavors. The shortcake provides a rich, buttery taste with a slightly crumbly texture, while the strawberries add a natural sweetness and a juicy, refreshing element. The whipped cream brings a creamy and velvety texture, balancing out the flavors and adding a touch of indulgence to the dessert. When all the elements are combined, each bite of strawberry shortcake offers a perfect balance of flavors that is both comforting and satisfying.

Although the classic recipe remains a favorite, there are various regional and personal variations of strawberry shortcake. Some variations may use different types of cakes as a base, such as sponge cake or biscuit-like shortcakes. Additionally, some people prefer to macerate the strawberries by sprinkling them with sugar to enhance their sweetness and create a syrup-like consistency. Others may add additional flavors, such as vanilla extract or lemon zest, to the shortcake batter or whipped cream for a unique twist. Some creative adaptations even include adding other fruits like blueberries or peaches alongside the strawberries. These variations allow for a diverse range of strawberry shortcakes, each with its own distinct flavor profile and appeal.

  • ½ Tsp salt
  • ½ Cup unsalted butter cold and cut into small pieces
  • Cup milk
  • 1 Tsp vanilla extract

  • ¼ Cup granulated sugar
  • 1 Cup heavy cream
  • 2 Tbsp powdered sugar
  • 1 Tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  • Add the cold butter to the dry ingredients. Using a pastry cutter or your fingertips, cut the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Pour in the milk and vanilla extract. Stir until the dough comes together. Be careful not to overmix.
  • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Gently knead it a few times to bring it together. Pat the dough into a 1-inch thick round.
  • Using a biscuit cutter or a glass, cut out individual shortcakes and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  • Bake the shortcakes for about 12-15 minutes or until they turn golden brown. Remove from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack.
  • While the shortcakes are cooling, prepare the filling. In a bowl, mix the sliced strawberries with granulated sugar. Set aside and allow them to macerate for about 15 minutes, until they release their juices.
  • In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until soft peaks form.
  • To assemble the strawberry shortcakes, slice the cooled shortcakes in half horizontally. Place the bottom halves on serving plates.
  • Spoon a generous amount of macerated strawberries onto each shortcake bottom. Top with a dollop of whipped cream. Place the shortcake tops on the whipped cream.
  • Garnish with additional sliced strawberries and mint leaves, if desired.
